Rod

A word from Rod:

I’m excited for you to try this workout! I have to admit on days where I don’t tap dance or do some other physical activity I have trouble getting to sleep at night. Then that makes getting up the next day even harder. However when I get a good tap workout in - I fall asleep much faster - and feel fresher in the morning. Have you experienced a similar situation?

I noticed I’m also less likely to wake up in the middle of the night and not get back to sleep if I got a good tap session in the previous day. I have to say though that my favorite thing about a good tap workout is that I get to improve my skills while getting a workout in.

People think that because I teach tap for a living my skills just automatically stay sharp. Not true! And the older I get the faster they decline if I don’t keep up on them. So getting a good tap workout in helps me sleep better and keep my technique up to par.

I also notice I have a better mood later in the day. I do a fair amount of work on the computer (like typing this right now) and on the days I don’t get my tap workout in I get pretty grumpy around 7 or 8pm. When I do workout I usually stay pretty positive until bedtime and when bedtime comes - I am ready for it!

I want you to know that when you finish the workout you don’t have to stop tapping. In fact once you get your stamina up, the workout will be more of a warm-up. And once you finish with it then you can put on some music you really like and just jam. That can be a lot of fun. Or you can alternate days - one day do the workout and the next just jam - that way you get a nice balance between structure and freedom.

Either way I do recommend you stretch out your muscles afterwards. A lot of people look at me surprised when I say afterwards because they assume you should stretch before. Well unless your jumping into the air, doing a full twist and then landing in the splits (I totally did this when I was younger) I don’t think you’re going to pull a muscle tap dancing. On the other hand if you don’t stretch after a good workout, your muscles can stay tight all night long. And if you do the workout several times a week that tightness can compound. I speak from experience! I once had tendonitis in my ankles so bad I had to teach holding on to the back of a chair! Eventually I figured out that doing serious stretching after my long days of teaching made the tendonitis go away. So to this day I make stretching a priority so I can be pain free and keep up my tap dancing.

I want you to be pain-free too and I want you to get all the benefits I get from a great tap workout. It will really make a positive difference in your life. I’m looking forward to tapping with you!
